When it comes to search engine optimization, there are a lot of myths and stories that people like to tell when it comes to ranking websites in the search engines.

But I really don’t want you to fall victim to the search engine optimization myths…

Which is why I’m going to take some time to dispel these myths for you right now, so that they do not harm you at some point in the future.

Because honestly, when you look at some of the forums out there, they say things about search engine optimization that just isn’t true.

And if you read some of this information, and take it as gospel, you’ll only be harming yourself and your business.

So, with that said, let’s take a look at some of the different search engine optimization myths right now…

SEO Myth #1 – High-Quality Content = Rankings

As a content creator, I would personally love to tell you that high quality content will automatically get you high rankings in the search engines.

In theory it certainly makes the most sense, but in reality it’s just not true.

There are so many websites online with tons of great content that don’t rank anywhere near the top of the search engine for their desired keywords.

As a quality business owner, I’m sure you have websites that have great content on then and they are nowhere near the top three spots on Google.

While quality content is definitely important for other things, like customer acquisition and providing your visitors with a good value, it really does not influence SEO at all.

So if you think you are going to be able to put up some quality articles on your website and then immediately show up at number one in Google, Yahoo and Bing, then I’m here to tell you that you are most likely (but not always) wrong.

SEO Myth #2 – Backlinks Aren’t Necessary in Order to Rank Highly in the Search Engines

I don’t know why some people insist on saying that backlinks do not mean anything as far as search engine rankings are concerned.

That’s probably the most idiotic statement ever uttered when it comes to SEO.

Because here’s the real truth…

If you do not have backlinks pointing to your website, then it’s going to be very difficult for you to rank highly on Google in many cases.

There are some terms that really aren’t that competitive, and you can put up a page that has proper on-page SEO and still rank. But this is definitely not true for those highly competitive terms, and backlinks are so important in that situation.

They are the major difference between ranking highly in the search engines and not ranking in the search engines at all.

So if you want to rank highly for a term like “weight loss”, expect to need thousands of backlinks pointing to your page, and hopefully you’re going to have a lot of high page rank links mixed in there in order to compete with the big boys already ranking for that term.

It’s extremely competitive, and quality backlinks are the only way you’re going to even slightly compete.

SEO Myth #3 – Exact Match Domain Names Are Completely Dead and Useless in the Eyes of the Search Engines

When Google released one of their most recent Panda updates, they tried to convince the world that exact match domains didn’t possess any value any longer.

As a matter of fact, they went through their results and removed the lot of the “low value, exact match domain websites” from their search results.

Think about this for a second…

Just because you have an exact match domain, does that guarantee that it has to be a low value website?

If you make that website valuable, and you consistently add content, get good backlinks pointing to the pages and do everything right, then your EMD is going to be extremely valuable and it will rank a lot higher than a non-EMD site.

The SEO experts that I know prove this time and time again. I’ve even proved this myself on many occasions.

So if you think EMDs are not valuable any longer, then that’s your prerogative. But the truth is, exact match domains possess a tremendous amount of value and they will make your search engine optimization so much easier if you have them.

Final Thoughts about Search Engine Optimization Myths

I presented you the main SEO myths that I can think of right off the top of my head. I’m sure there are a few others that I didn’t even touch upon, but these seem to be the ones I hear about the most.

If you believe in any of these myths, then change your attitude toward them. If you use this information to your advantage, it could make your SEO go over a lot easier.
